"Hi, my name is Donna and I am a Cure Leukaemia funded specialist research nurse. Everyone's world has been turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic and, as a nurse currently working on the front-line, it is a scary and uncertain time for all healthcare professionals and our patients.
That is why I have setup this #EyeSmile campaign as a light-hearted way for us all to keep spirits up during these testing times and allow the public to show their appreciation for all healthcare professionals across the world right now working tirelessly to combat COVID-19."
Following the launch of the #TwoPointSixChallenge, a campaign to help all charities across the UK address an expected £4 billion income shortfall following the coronavirus pandemic, Cure Leukaemia specialist research nurse Donna Walsh came up with her own 2.6 challenge - to flood the internet with 26,000 #EyeSmile #SelfPPE's. And for those who post their photos, to encourage their friends and family to donate just £2.60 to show their support.
If 26,000 people were to do this, the challenge would raise a phenomenal £67,600 for national blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia, the charity that funds Donna's role and also specialist research nurses at 12 blood cancer centres across the UK.
Every penny raised for Cure Leukaemia will be invested in funding nurses across the UK to administer potentially life-saving clinical trials for blood cancer patients. Many of Cure Leukaemia's nurses have been redeployed to the front-line to run COVID-19 clinical trials, so all generous donations would directly help the global fight against this virus.
