We have relunctantly postponed our Copa Del CL 6-a-side football tournament at St George’s Park with a new date confirmed as Friday October 15th 2021. The tournament, which had a host of football legends confirmed to play with and against amateur players from across the country, was due to take place on March 12th, however the latest government COVID-19 restrictions announced this week regarding indoor sports has meant the event cannot take place at this time.
Thankfully the majority of the former football legends due to play this year have confirmed they will play in the 2021 event including; former England, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Sunderland striker Darren Bent, stars of ‘Harry’s Heroes’ Lee Hendrie and Kevin Phillips, ex-Chelsea, Norwich, Celtic and Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton, Southampton royalty Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali, Aston Villa speedster Gabby Agbonlahor, former Ireland International Stephen Hunt, former Crystal Palace and Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison and ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman.
All of Cure Leukaemia’s major fundraising events in 2020 were cancelled leaving the charity facing a £1,500,000 deficit and the impact of the virus looks set to have a similar impact in the first quarter of 2021.
“We were very hopeful that the Copa Del CL could take place this year but with the new government restrictions on indoor sports announced we cannot deliver this event” said Cure Leukaemia CEO James McLaughlin.
“This postponement means that all of our events in 2020 have now been cancelled or moved to a new date and this clearly has a major impact on our fundraising for this year. With a shortfall £1,500,000 this clearly puts a huge amount of pressure on us as a charity but I am delighted that we have been able to announce a rescheduled date in March next year and also confirm that the majority of ex-professionals and teams can attend this new date.”
“We still have some teams available for the event next spring so I would urge people to consider joining us for what will be a fantastic day at the home of English football."
The event will be hosted by Sky Sports’ Johnny Phillips and BBC Match of the Day Kickabout presenter Kenzie Benali and another star of ITV’s ‘Harry Heroes’, Ray Parlour, will provide the evening entertainment after a 3-course meal for the players in the on-site Hilton Hotel.
With team slots still available there is also an opportunity for individuals to take part and play in ex-England, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Nottingham Forest midfielder, blood cancer survivor and Cure Leukaemia Patron Geoff Thomas’ team. Geoff’s managerial record in the last two tournaments has been nothing short of diabolical so he is looking for good players to join his squad which will include Clinton Morrison.
To apply to join Geoff’s team email Geoff@cureleukaemia.co.uk.
The last two events have attracted teams from major companies from across the UK including Deutsche Bank, KPMG, LDC, Ocean Outdoor, The Binding Site and Squire Patton Boggs. All teams receive their own, personalised and fully branded kit for the event as well. Chris Hurley, Chief Portfolio Officer at returning LDC said:
“LDC are delighted to support the team at Cure Leukaemia and the vital work they are doing. The Copa Del CL provides the ideal springboard; it is original, ambitious, engaging and team focused allowing our LDC colleagues to lace up their boots and show their on-field talents in a unique location alongside some of the great names of English football.
We look forward to supporting Cure Leukaemia further in 2021 and beyond with an even more exciting tournament.”
Cure Leukaemia CEO James McLaughlin, who has played in both previous tournaments continued:
“The funds raised from this event ensure the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) can continue connecting blood cancer patients from a UK catchment area of over 20 million people with pioneering treatments through clinical trials.
It is now more important than ever that we continue to offer blood cancer patients hope and that’s why I hope that we can secure more teams for the Copa Del CL and, in turn, raise as many funds as possible early next year.”
The cost to enter is £2,750 inc VAT per squad (based around ten players) or £3,500 inc VAT for teams who wish to include a football legend.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available – email firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
