Geoff Thomas MBE Honoured at The Sporting Club Awards for Tireless Work Fighting Blood Cancer

Former England footballer and Patron of Cure Leukaemia, Geoff Thomas MBE, was celebrated last night with the prestigious Special Recognition Award at The Sporting Club Awards. The event, held at the iconic Royal Lancaster Hotel, saw a host of sports stars honoured, including Sir Jackie Stewart and Olympic champion Alex Yee, while shining a spotlight on Geoff’s remarkable fundraising efforts, which have generated millions to support blood cancer patients worldwide.

The award comes nearly two decades after Geoff’s own life-changing diagnosis with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2003. Following a successful stem cell transplant from his sister and recovery, Geoff has dedicated his life to advancing research and care for those affected by blood cancer.

Central to Geoff’s fundraising efforts is The Tour 21, a gruelling cycling challenge that mirrors the route of the Tour de France. Geoff has impressively completed the feat six times, inspiring others to join the cause while raising vital funds for Cure Leukaemia, helping put charity at the forefront of blood cancer treatment and research.

“This award was a total surprise,” Geoff said. “I’m absolutely delighted and incredibly honoured, but my work is far from done. Blood cancer is still taking lives, and we’re on a mission to change that. There’s so much more planned for 2025 and beyond—watch this space!”

Geoff’s determination has inspired thousands, including fellow cyclists and donors, to support his mission. His efforts have contributed to Cure Leukaemia’s ability to expand its Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP), which connects patients to potentially life-saving clinical trials across the UK, and recently launch the ATICUS paediatric transplant trials network.

The Sporting Club Awards recognised Geoff not only for his sporting achievements but also for his transformation into a leading figure in the fight against blood cancer.

“As a footballer, I fought for wins on the pitch, but this is the fight of my life, and one I am proud to be part of,” Geoff added. “Every pedal stroke, every pound raised, brings us closer to a cure.”

With plans already in motion for new initiatives in 2025, Geoff Thomas continues to inspire hope and action. His work underscores the power of sport and determination to bring about meaningful change for those battling blood cancer worldwide.
