Blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia has become the official charity for ‘Aztec Escape’, an action-packed obstacle course race (OCR) which takes place on Saturday May 18th at the beautiful Cliff Lakes in Tamworth. Working in conjunction with the Aztec Escape team this will be the Cure Leukaemia Family Fun Day 2019 with entrants invited to take part in the various OCR distances at a reduced price in return for fundraising.
People of all ages are encouraged to take part with a ‘Rookie Race’ for kids and then distances of 6km, 12km, 18km and 24km available for all abilities. There will be fun, family-focussed activities available on site throughout the day to keep all ages entertained!
Marc Webb, the organiser of Aztec Escape, approached Cure Leukaemia after hearing the inspiring story of leukaemia patient and close family friend Mark Nicholas. Mark, an IT consultant from Kenilworth, has been an integral part of Cure Leukaemia’s story ever since he signed up to ride the first Velo Birmingham just weeks before his stem cell transplant to combat chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in 2017.
Thankfully, Mark is currently in remission thanks to treatment from Cure Leukaemia Co-Founder Professor Charlie Craddock CBE at the Centre for Clinical Haematology in Birmingham. He continues to support the charity wherever possible and was delighted to help promote this event.
He said: “I’ve known Marc and his family for many years and I was delighted when I heard that he was teaming up with the charity that means so much to me. This looks like a fantastic event and the perfect day out for the whole family and I hope lots of people sign up to raise funds for Cure Leukaemia.
“Every single penny raised directly supports the doctors and nurses who made sure I’m still here so I’d urge people to get involved, you will be helping saves lives.’
Marc, who started Aztec Escape in 2018 said:
“I am really excited to be working alongside Cure Leukaemia this year because I know, through Mark’s story, how vital funds raised for the charity are.
“Our event is really growing in the OCR community. It was a fantastic day in 2018, and we have so many exciting new plans for this year’s event including adding the family friendly aspect which I think is really important. This is the perfect day out for the family!
“Entry for every distance is available at a reduced price in return for fundraising so I’d encourage people to get involved and be part of a special event supporting a brilliant charity.”
