A former leukaemia patient is marking the milestone of reaching 40 by holding a special birthday raffle to raise funds for Cure Leukaemia – to help more patients overcome the disease in the future.
Marie Sams was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia back in 2016, undergoing several gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and a cord blood transplant at what was an incredible difficult time for their young family.
Thankfully Marie came through the treatment process to go into remission, and has since made it her mission to try and help Cure Leukaemia, the charity which funded her treatment nurse, Naomi.
Now, with the help of niece Sophie, there are plans for a different sort of fundraiser as she approaches one of life’s big milestones.
“Every year, I would like to do something to raise funds for Cure Leukaemia,” says Marie, who works as an Operations Manager at Coventry University.
“Turning 40 is a big milestone for anyone, and especially for me, given the realisation that at one time, I might not even have reached it.
“Having presents off people is all material – and there is nothing that I really need.
“So I decided to try and do a raffle for my birthday, thinking that maybe family members and friends will be able to provide prizes from their workplaces and so on.
“Businesses so far have been very generous - but we would like to make this a BIG raffle so donations are still very welcome!
“I have seen first-hand the difference that Cure Leukaemia can make to people’s lives, and that is why I want to help the charity as much as I can.
“After doing the Velo last year, I was looking for something a little less energetic this time around!
“Then my niece Sophie got involved, and she - and the rest of the family - have been brilliant and done really well in getting lots of donations from all over the West Midlands.
“We are going to carry on collecting as many prizes as we can until the end of April, and then announce details of how we are going to run the raffle online, so watch this space!”
Prizes which Sophie has already managed to secure include homeware, restaurant gift cards, beauty hampers, Comedy Club tickets, Experience Days (click link for more information). photography vouchers and beauty vouchers.
Anyone who might be able to provide Sophie with any more prizes to help Marie to mark her 40th birthday and support Cure Leukaemia is asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will then announce details of the raffle prizes and procedures in plenty of time to purchase tickets ahead of Marie’s birthday on May 24th. The draw will be made on the 1st June 2020.
